Laser Tattoo Removal
Laser technology allows for safe, effective treatment of virtually any tattoo, from a simple tattoo of one color, to complex, multi-colored tattoos.  The theory of “selective photothermolysis” revolutionized laser therapy for tattoo removal.  The wavelength of the light of a laser can be fine tuned to match the wave length of a particular target, or color.  The laser light and heat will selectively heat up and destroy the target without damaging the surrounding tissue and skin, thus decreasing risk of scarring.  The result is progressive fading and eventual disappearance of the tattoo with no resulting scarring or blemish.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQs

How is the procedure performed?
Laser treatments for tattoo removal are done in Dr. Guida’s office, often requiring either an injection of local anesthetic or application of a topical anesthetic cream.  The tattoo is usually photographed prior to treatment to monitor progress.  Once the treatment is complete, an antibiotic ointment and bandage is placed.

How will I heal after the procedure?
The treated area may be red and slightly swollen right after treatment.  Cool compresses after the procedure are comforting and help reduce swelling.  A small amount of bleeding and light crusting may occur, requiring coverage with an antibiotic ointment and bandage.  This usually heals in a few days.  It may take a week or so for the crusting to heal.  You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

How many treatments will I need to get rid of my tattoo?
There will be significant fading after 1 to 2 treatments.  Your individual skin type, color of tattoo, and type of inks used all determine how many treatments will be needed for near total fading of the tattoo.  Often as many as 5 – 8 treatments may be needed for near total fading.

Can I totally get rid of my tattoo?
There are cases when the tattoo can be completely removed with laser treatments.  Frequently, most of the tattoo is faded and difficult to see after adequate treatment.  Due to the nature of certain tattoo ink, variability of placing tattoos worldwide, and different skin types, it is impossible for Dr. Guida to accurately predict exact number of treatments for a satisfactory end point of treatment.
