Laser Treatment of Brown Spots & Pigmented Lesions FAQs

How does laser treatment for pigmented lesion and brown age spots work?
Laser technology has advanced to the point of being able to remove pigmented lesions safely without damage to surrounding normal skin, yielding fresher, smoother, clear looking skin.  The theory of “selective photothermolysis” revolutionized laser therapy for hyperpigmented lesions of the skin and age spots.  The wavelength of the light of a laser can be fine tuned to match the wave length of a particular target, like melanin in the lesion.  The laser light and heat will selectively heat up and destroy the target with damaging the surrounding tissue and skin, thus decreasing risk of scarring.  The result is more youthful appearing skin and a cleaner smoother complexion.

How is the procedure performed?
Laser treatments for pigmented lesions are done in Dr. Guida’s office requiring no anesthesia except for occasional use of topical anesthetic cream.  There are several lasers we currently use, depending on the nature of the pigmented lesion.  Dr. Guida will decide which modality is most appropriate.

How will I heal after the procedure?
The treated area may be red and slightly swollen right after treatment.  Cool compresses after the procedure are comforting and help reduce swelling.  Occasionally a light crusting will develop, requiring coverage with an antibiotic ointment.  This usually heals in a few days.  You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment with light make up application, if needed.

When can I expect the treated areas to fade?
The laser heat breaks up the pigment in the skin and it may take several days to a week or so for them to disappear.  Often, one treatment will completely and successfully remove the pigmented lesion.  However, there are times when several treatments are needed depending on the number, size, and color of the lesion.
